To be a wonderful, supportive mentor who guides candidates every step of the way. That’s the hope of Ed.D Leadership Team member Dr. Beth Schurman. Dr. Schurman currently serves as Chair of the Department of English at Olivet Nazarene University and has taught at the collegiate level for more than 10 years. She’s excited to bring her enthusiasm and passion for research and writing to Olivet Online’s Ed.D program.
In the last few years, Dr. Schurman has been exploring the role of service-learning projects and how they affect students' perceptions of their students, their communities, and their literacy needs and interests. Her previous coursework and experience in research has largely been in the qualitative realm, so she is hoping to be able to support and guide students in the Ed.D program who might have interests in these areas.
Whether on the graduate or undergraduate side, Dr. Schurman’s love for Olivet comes down to the people. In fact, she has found that the faculty support students and one another in ways that are not paralleled elsewhere. More specifically, at Olivet students will find faculty who care about their spiritual well-being as much as their academic achievements.
Dr. Schurman and her husband, Jeff, have four children: two sons, Ethan and Emmett, and two daughters, Farrah and Faith. Finding her with a book in her hand probably wouldn't be surprising. For fresh air and exercise, she enjoys the outdoors, especially running, biking and camping.
