Dr. Jonathan Pickering brings an impressive combination of practical leadership experience and expertise in qualitative research and analysis. His professional background includes over 25 years of experience in higher education, including work within registration and records, institutional effectiveness, and academic affairs. That experience was obtained at private, not-for-profit institutions, most recently as Dean of Academic Operations at Olivet Nazarene University. In that role, he conducts institutional research and prepares statistical reports to support college-wide planning and management. He also works with senior administrators and other university officials to determine key indicators to measure and track institutional performance and provide oversight to the Office of the Registrar and for institutional assessment and accreditation activities.

From an educational background, Dr. Pickering’s research looked at the changing environment of Christian education and involved talking with presidents of Christian universities and engaging with leaders to see how changing values in society are impacting Christian universities.

Trained to do qualitative research methodology, Dr. Pickering understands the value of solid research and helps candidates gain adequate skills to ask good research questions and create protocol so that research can be accepted as contributing to academic literature in a particular subject area. Plus, research that is meaningful, rigorous, and valid can lead to its potential publication.

Dr. Pickering has been happily married for over 20 years; he has three sons, two of whom are attending college while his youngest is still in high school. He also has a beagle mix, who keeps him physically active. To stay mentally active, he reads a wide variety of fiction. Dr. Pickering is grateful to have grown up in a Christian home and does not remember a time he did not know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. Faith is something that is integrated into every aspect of our lives, and one of the great things about Olivet is the way that faith is intentionally integrated with learning.
